You can’t teleport yourself to your favourite spot, just as you can’t teleport yourself to success.
It might sound like a downer, but I think this is probably ultimately a good thing. Reaching a holiday destination after a long journey is such a great feeling. So is accomplishing a goal after putting in copious amounts of effort. I’m even going to venture that the satisfaction experienced (and how long it lasts for) is proportional to the length of the path travelled.
This is why every step matters.
It is why every single day is a new step, in and of itself. Coming up with a routine and sticking to it can be incredibly difficult, whether you’re trying to diet, work out or pursue an artistic project (or in my case, all three at once).
The trick is to recommit every morning. Tell yourself you will do [insert mini goal here] for today. Tomorrow is simply another day, which you don’t need to concern yourself with at the moment. Today, you will follow the rules you set for yourself. You can even shorten your commitment to an hour, a minute, a moment, if you want.
In this moment, you are doing this. Right here. Right now. All other thoughts, worries and preoccupations belong to another moment, another time.
Of course, it’s possible to string all these moments together to form a minute, an hour or even a day. Eventually (even if you devote only one moment each day), you’ll accomplish what you set out to do, and possibly even more. Your moments will build up and so will your efforts. You will end the day feeling proud of yourself. Then, you will go to sleep.
In the morning, you will wake up to a new day. New steps, new challenges, new moments. You will get through them, because you will look yourself in the mirror and commit to your dream all over again.
Yes, and again…
… until you are where you want to be.
And then you will do it all over again with something else, just for the hell of it. Because that’s what life is made of and what makes it worth living. 🙂
On a related note, I took a kind of big step recently. One of my poems, Diagnostic, is getting published in Stardust, Always, a tribute anthology for David Bowie and Alan Rickman, who both passed away from cancer at the start of the year – please take a minute to check it out and preorder a copy. It will be released on the 5th of June in Kindle and paperback formats and all proceeds will go to cancer research.
